eBusinessDomains.com Is One Year Old, Today

Filed under: Domain Industry News — Tags: , , — Kevin Jackson @ 11:42 am

Time flies when you are having fun! Today is exactly one year since the launch of the eBusinessDomains.com domain marketplace.

This blog was launched on September 1st last year, so we still has just over a month to go before a full year of blogging.

I believe we have done very well in terms of what we have achieved. We have never done a press release, any paid (blog) reviews, and we have done very minimal paid banner advertisements.

eBusinessDomains.com receives lots of traffic on a daily basis and we have sold numerous domain names.

Our aim from the start was to create a domain marketplace that only lists premium domains capable of successfully branding ebusinesses.

We have been consistent from the start, and I have consistently and repeatedly blogged about quality domains, and their importance to businesses.

Personally I believe by preaching the gospel of quality domains I have earned a few “enemies”, for want of a better word. I think I would be pissed as well if I owned crappy domains and some guy comes on the scene and start making a big fuss about quality domains, rendering my domains useless.

However, I think people should thank me. A crappy domain is always a crappy domain, and I may have saved some people a lot of money in senseless renewal fees.

Over the past year we have done a complete redesign of our site, started a newsletter, this blog and a forum, introduced domain auctions, launched numerous sister websites, and even created a user control panel/management system.

I am proud of what we have achieved with the website. From the very beginning, I wanted a website that would be informative and resourceful, even to the complete newbies. If someone without the slightest clue about domain names visits our website, they will be able to learn a lot about domains. They will:

- learn the basics about domains
- become aware of the domain aftermarket
- get valuable advice about domain investments
- realise the importance of a premium domains to an ebusiness
- and much more

Quite frankly, we still have a long way to go. We have spent the last year building our brand, experimenting and perfecting a few concepts, strategies and technologies.

There will be a day when the spotlight will be turned on the domain industry and we will be ready to capitalise on that exposure. We are building a domain marketplace and brand that is fit for purpose and relevant, without any senseless hype and bogus PR stunts.

I want to personally express my heartfelt gratitude to all the people who have genuinely supported us over the past year. Some people were there with us from the very start.

I will not name anyone, as I will inevitably forget to mention a few people. We look forward to working with you and building our brand and domain marketplace, while helping the domain community and the domain industry to grow in the years to come!

Get Your Domain Name Strategies Right For The Rest of 2009

Filed under: Domain Strategies — Tags: , — Kevin Jackson @ 10:53 am

We are now officially in the second half of the year. The 1st of July is the of the year time when I analyse my goals and objectives for the year to see how well things are going according to plan.

This gives me a chance to set new objectives, make adjustments or even adapt to ways of doing things and create new strategies altogether.

If you run an ebusiness, or plan to do one, the remainder of this year may be your very last chance to get your category-killer domain name at bargain prices. All domain marketplaces, big and small are now seeing an increase in demand for quality ebusiness domains.

I really can’t see how people can even begin to have the slightest doubt that domains will be increasingly in great demand. Everyone that does business on the Internet wants to stand out in the crowd. Whether it is a blog or full eCommerce website, everyone wants the perfect domain name.

Some may not realise as yet that they can in fact buy their desired or category killer domain name on the domain aftermarket, while some simply can’t afford it, as yet.

We are hearing more and more stories of people making huge sacrifices and taking big risks just to secure their perfect domain name. As they say “the early bird will catch the most worms”. Those who “get” domains before their competitors do, will reap the rewards.

If you are in the business of buying and selling domains, perhaps you could use the rest of 2009 to cleanse your portfolio. Get rid of domains that are a liability and invest in domains that will become assets and increase in value.

Some people learn just by listening, while some can only learn from experience, or from their mistakes.

Whatever your domain name strategies are, you really want to make quality domains the central theme of your domain game.

How Are You Playing The Expired Domain Game?

There are so many domainers that live for the domain drop. Some domainers spend hours daily sifting through countless expired domain lists. Who said that domainers were lazy?

Some people use expired domain lists to search for domain names with traffic while some focus solely on quality domain names. If you are lucky, you may find a premium domain name that has traffic as well.

It is really down to one’s domaining strategy. If you want to focus on monetization then you would focus on traffic domains. If you want to focus on end-user domain sales, then you will give more priority to quality ebusiness domains rather than traffic domains.

If you focus on traffic domains, then your only concern may be to have the parking/PPC revenues cover the registration fees. If you buy the domain names on the domain aftermarket, then you will want to recover your initial investments within reasonable time, perhaps within 2-3 years.

However, depending on the nature and source of the traffic, there is always the risk of the domain name losing the traffic over a period of time. This can happen when the backlinks are removed or when the domain loses its favourable search engine rankings.

Those that opt to choose quality premium domains over traffic domains would be looking at long-term gains rather than the short-term gains provided through domain parking.

Those who choose revenue domains will only need to ensure that each domain name earns enough to cover their renewal fees. Those who choose to invest in quality domains will need to sell enough domains to cover the renewal fees of their domain portfolio. With the latter, it one could cover the renewal fees and even make a profit from just one major domain deal.

Domain parking revenues are down from what they use to be a few years back. So it may be sensible to have a mixture.

I would recommend acquiring only domains that you would personally be interested in developing. If a sale happens, then you can acquire another domain name to develop.

Quality is the New Domain Game

Filed under: Domain Aftermarket, Domain Marketplaces — Tags: — Kevin Jackson @ 6:09 pm

To be honest, I thought I was making a mistake by being so strict on quality control. It does take a lot of time to sift through countless domains to maintain a marketplace that consistently sells pure quality domain names.

However it seems like domainers and other marketplace are finally waking up to the real impact of dealing solely with quality domains.

Auctioneers are getting better at producing quality auction lists and more domain marketplaces are now adopting a more stringent approach to the type of domains they list on their marketplaces.

This is good for the domain industry. I have been preaching the gospel of quality domains for a long time now, and I believe I have even earned the irony of many in doing so.

I am thinking however, about what could have caused this unified approach to domain quality. Is it the economic downturn, low parking revenues or is it due to the recent uproar regarding the poor results of some recent domain auctions?

I think it is all of the above, really.

With the economic downturn, buyers will be pickier about what they get for their money, and domainers strapped for cash will bring more quality domains to the marketplace for much less.

With domain parking, well revenues are down. This is affecting everyone, but for me it is honestly a bitter-sweet moment. I absolutely hate seeing people posting rubbish domains for sale and then posting nonsensical stats that they claim will make the stupid domains priceless.

The uncertainty that is surrounding domain parking revenues has effectively forced domain investors to look beyond parking, and start evaluating domains more on their commercial values. If I buy a domain name like Toys.com I would spend a million dollars easily without even caring to ask about stats. The quality is sufficient enough to command a decent asking price.

I wrote before that I ignore emails requesting domain stats. I deal with eBusiness domains. These are domains that are commercial and are of reasonable quality where they can comfortably and successfully brand an ebusiness.

The recent uproar regarding quality domains in auctions helped as well. It is not so much as to the uproar, but more about who was raising the concerns. People just had to stop and take notice.

Well done domainers. A new day has begun. Goodbye to rubbish domains. Well, it will be wishful thinking for the foreseeable future for some. As for me and my marketplace, we shall continue to deal solely with quality domains.
