On September 7, 1998 Larry Page and Sergey Brin founded Google Inc. Their initial investment was just $100,000 and Google was started with just four computers.
The founders hired Craig Silverstein, now Director of Technology, as their first employee, and set up shop in a friend’s garage.
Google at the time was still in alpha, with an index of around 25 million pages, and but was handling 10,000 search queries every day.
The company grew quickly, and on June 7 1999, the company announced that it had secured a round of funding that included $25 million from Sequoia Capital and Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Buyers.
Google currently has 20,000 employees and a market value of $150 billion. Their founders, Page and Brin, are now both 35 now and have an estimated net worth of $19 billion each.
Google launched Chrome, its very own web browser on September 1st 2008. Many view this as another step taken by Google to garner more dominance on the web.
It’s really a birthday worth celebrating for Google. What would life be without them?
