Forget John McCain, or Barack Obama. Joe the Plumber – also known as Joe Wurzelbacher – was the real star of last Wednesday night’s presidential debate.
John McCain raised the plumber from Toledo, Ohio, early on in the debate as an example of the kind of people who would suffer under Obama’s tax plans. From that point on, it seemed as if the two opponents could barely get enough of him.
Joe’s name came up 25 times during the 90-minute debate.
JoeThePlumber.com has experienced an unbeleivable surge in traffic. According to data from Alexa.com, the traffic to the JoeThePlumber.com was simply non-existent. However, since the debate, the Alexa weekly traffic rank for JoeThePlumber.com has increased to 79,152. Yesterday’s ranking for the site is 53,684. Wow!
This has got me thinking about free traffic in a totally different way!
I would not regard JoeThePlumber.com as a premium domain name, but this could change the way local businesses choose their domain names, going forward.
Imagine what would happen if every small business owner begin adopting the principle of naming their website with their first name, followed by their trade/profession. Perhaps I should register KevinTheAccountant.com or kevinTheDomainer.com… erm… no, thank you.

This is the beauty of a great Call To Action Domain. They are not only memorable they also bring an image to mind that narrows the “Generic” or the “Brand”.
A great Call to Action Domain can take a product or person with a name that is hard to pronounce, spell or remember and instantly propel you into the limelight. Look at what “where’s the beef” did for Wendy’s years back.
There are plenty of current examples of major Brands and corporations using call to action domains in their advertising. For a great list take a look at this link to Rob Sequin’s site.

I would love to see the press surrounding the domain and potential domain sale of JoeThePlumber.com seep into the brick & mortar minds of Main Street.
Until this happens though, pattern domaining like this will be a losing proposition — names like these drop in bulk every day… http://godrops.com
