Does Domain Age or Registration Length Really Affect Search Engine Rankings?

Filed under: Domain Strategies, SEO | Search Engine Optimization — Tags: , — Kevin Jackson @ 9:42 am

A lot of people seem to think that older domains are more valuable. The notion is that if a domain name was created/registered a few years ago it would be more valuable than one that was created, let’s say last month.

This quite frankly, in my opinion is blatant nonsense. Quality domain names are collectible items, but they don’t share the same valuation methods of lets say, an 18th-century painting.

The age of a domain name cannot affect the quality of a domain name. When I look at Shoes.com, I don’t immediately see if the domain name is 15 days or 15 years old. I see the keywords, the length, the TLD and the branding potential instantly.

Now lets be real here. If the age of the domain name has anything to do with how a website is ranked in the search engines, it will NOT be the domain age, but rather the length of time that the website has been online and how much SEO quality is built in and around the actual website.

With regards to length of registration, well this for me is just another myth. But there might be something to it, but nothing much really. Can’t be anything much.

What some people are believing is that if you register the domain name for your website for more than one year, then it sends a signal to the search engines that you are committed to your website.

Normally spammers will do all manner of evil with a domain name until it is banned. Spammers will not want to register a domain name for any lengthy time, as there is a risk that if caught, the domain name will become useless to them.

That is the rational that people are presenting. This is again, blatant nonsense.

It is the content and quality of your website that matters. How boring or easy would it be for search engines to rank websites based on the domains age or length of registration?

If you are not convinced, then you might want check out this video.

Proven - Keyword-rich Domains Help With Search Engine Rankings

Last week I blogged about some new minisites and domaining resources that we had just launched.

Now it’s time to do the bragging. DomainConferences.com now has number one spot on Google for “Domain Conferences”.

The website only has one content page, and is not promoted at all except for a the links it got in a recent post.

This definitely highlights the value and importance of keyword-rich domains in Search Engine Results Placements.

We got this result within just days of launching the website. The domain name did not have any previous rankings as it was been forwarded to eBusinessDomains.com for over a year.

We will definitely be adding more content to DomainConferences.com and will be taking this domain name to the next level.

If you are a starting a new ebusiness, and you want to earn instant credibility and great placement in your niche, then you need to checkout our domain marketplace in the first instance for the perfect keyword-rich domain name.

That is what we specialise in!

Private Domain Registration Won’t Hurt Search Engine Rankings

Registering domain names will result in identifying information being exposed to the general public. The Whois information can be a gold-mine for spammers.

Domain owners can eliminate this problem by opting get their domains privately registered, where their details are kept absolutely private. This however is concern for some that the private registration of domains will have a negative impact on their search engine rankings.

Google has now affirmed that private domain registration won’t hurt search engine rankings.

The Search Engine Roundtable post quotes,

“According to JohnMu, it typically doesn’t impact rankings, so you need not worry if you are already implementing it. However, if you’re a business, why would you hide your identifying information? What does that say about your company? What happens if your web site gets hacked and there’s no obvious or working contact form on your site? It’ll be hard to get reached by Google or someone else who stumbles upon your site in that case. Thus, while it’s a hassle at times to have to worry about your identifying information, losing your rankings altogether due to intrusions can be a lot more costly to your business”.

Google Celebrates It’s 10th Birthday

On September 7, 1998 Larry Page and Sergey Brin founded Google Inc. Their initial investment was just $100,000 and Google was started with just four computers.

The founders hired Craig Silverstein, now Director of Technology, as their first employee, and set up shop in a friend’s garage.

Google at the time was still in alpha, with an index of around 25 million pages, and but was handling 10,000 search queries every day.

The company grew quickly, and on June 7 1999, the company announced that it had secured a round of funding that included $25 million from Sequoia Capital and Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Buyers.

Google currently has 20,000 employees and a market value of $150 billion. Their founders, Page and Brin, are now both 35 now and have an estimated net worth of $19 billion each.

Google launched Chrome, its very own web browser on September 1st 2008. Many view this as another step taken by Google to garner more dominance on the web.
