Does Domain Age or Registration Length Really Affect Search Engine Rankings?
A lot of people seem to think that older domains are more valuable. The notion is that if a domain name was created/registered a few years ago it would be more valuable than one that was created, let’s say last month.
This quite frankly, in my opinion is blatant nonsense. Quality domain names are collectible items, but they don’t share the same valuation methods of lets say, an 18th-century painting.
The age of a domain name cannot affect the quality of a domain name. When I look at Shoes.com, I don’t immediately see if the domain name is 15 days or 15 years old. I see the keywords, the length, the TLD and the branding potential instantly.
Now lets be real here. If the age of the domain name has anything to do with how a website is ranked in the search engines, it will NOT be the domain age, but rather the length of time that the website has been online and how much SEO quality is built in and around the actual website.
With regards to length of registration, well this for me is just another myth. But there might be something to it, but nothing much really. Can’t be anything much.
What some people are believing is that if you register the domain name for your website for more than one year, then it sends a signal to the search engines that you are committed to your website.
Normally spammers will do all manner of evil with a domain name until it is banned. Spammers will not want to register a domain name for any lengthy time, as there is a risk that if caught, the domain name will become useless to them.
That is the rational that people are presenting. This is again, blatant nonsense.
It is the content and quality of your website that matters. How boring or easy would it be for search engines to rank websites based on the domains age or length of registration?
