Indian TLD Domains Forum and Aftermarket

Filed under: Domain Brokerage, Domain TLDs, Geo Domains — Tags: , — Kevin Jackson @ 12:22 pm

I just want to highlight the great work that Jeff and his team are doing over at Inforum.in, a domain forum dedicated to Indian domain names.

Just a handful of people could envisage the true potential of domain names a decade ago. With India being one of the world’s fastest growing economy (even during unprecedented global economic turmoil) and home to over 1 billion people, it should not take a visionary to appreciate the true potential of Indian domains and TLD.

The Indian TLDs (.co.in and .in) have not really taken off as yet like other country TLDs. There are very little reported sales, and there are still a few great unregistered domains.

I invested in a few dictionary Indian TLDs some years ago, and have managed to sell a few. Unlike many other country TLDs, Indian domains DO get a lot of traffic. Am not surprised, as within a population of 1,129,866,154 people, there will certainly be a few niches.

India is a multi-lingual society. A lot of call centres for US and British companies are based in India, employing locally trained personnel. When customers dial their toll-free or national numbers, they are routed straight through to India.

India is also home to many IT professionals. This month DN Journal cover story features Divyank Turakhia, the 26-year-old Founder and CEO of Skenzo.com (and Co-Founder of parent company Directi). As a 16-year-old high school student in 1998, he and his brother Bhavin co-founded the Directi Group with a $600 loan from their parents. That tiny investment has sprouted into a global conglomerate that is believed to be worth over $300 million today.

Investments in Indian domains may not spell over night success, but the Indian TLDs are good buy-and-hold investments. My only problem with the Indian TLDs is that not many popular domain registrars offer them. If registrars can offer some of the unknown TLDs which I see them offering, then there is no justification for not offering the Indian TLDs. They are losing millions.

Check out Inforum.in and join in the discussions. You may find some great deals there! Inforum.in is also a valued sponsor of our blog.

Geo Domains Pull Serious Revenues

Filed under: Geo Domains — Tags: — Kevin Jackson @ 8:12 pm

Geography domains are turning out to be a hot and extremely challenging topic. The local search and the local appeal have been gaining popularity because of their huge potential for further development.

It was not long ago when municipal governments asserted that they were entitled to own a domain name with the name of the city, or even country. The courts did not buy their arguments and this resulted in the stampede for geo domains.

There are two factors selling geo domains: the popularity of the geographic location and The Population.

Geo domains sell because they are perfect for development and for bloggers to use them as tourist guide domains and directories. Geo domains can be used to sell anything local – hotel bookings, car rentals, restaurants, city tours, theatre you name it.

I have lived here in London for many years and have been to many of the top nightclubs, best restaurants and theatres. Yet, despite my very intimate knowledge of London, I still use geo websites such as londontown.com to plan the perfect night out.

LondonTown.com has been around for a long time (before the geo domains craze) and, at the time of writing, had an Alexa ranking of 18,531. This is to show that the geo domain/website concept is not really new, is extremely popular, useful and potentially financially rewarding.

For domainers who believe that they have to actually have the actual city dot com (such as London.com), here is proof that you don’t really have to:

At the time of writing, London.com is been redirected to LondonTown.com. The domain name London.com has an Alexa ranking of 3,325,522, compared to LondonTown.com’s 18,531.

The verdict: the city plus a suitable vertical dot com, such as London + Town dot com, will equate to profits when developed into dynamic and useful websites.

Geo domains are advertising gems, since they are natural traffic pullers… well sort of.

Geo Domains

Geo Domains are rapidly gaining popularity and are enjoying buoyant sales in the domain aftermarket.

Geo Domains are domain names that are the same as those of geographic entities, such as cities and countries. Examples of geo domains are Atlanta.com, LosAngeles.com, Texas.com and Memphis.org.

Geo Domains are highly valued as they are limited in number, instantly recognisable and have a local appeal.

Geo Domains are excellent for advertising local businesses. Geographic domain names are estimated to represent approximately over 500 million dollars a year in gross hotel bookings alone.
