Wow! The last day of 2009! What a great year this has been!
At the time of writing countries such as New Zealand and Australia have already entered 2010!
Today is the end of a year, a decade, and an era. Tonight, a new year, a new decade, a new era and a new season begins.
Unfortunately, I don’t have time to give a proper review of 2009 or the last decade, or even to make any predictions for the new year and decade. All I will say is that once 2010 kicks in, unbelievable changes will happen at unbelievable paces.
I remember that 10 years a go, we were just losing bulky analogue mobile phones to embrace heavy digital handsets with monochrome screens. I used to struggle to find space on my desk after the bulky computer monitor took up all the space, and the desktop then sat beneath the monitor. Internet connection was a mere 56kbps.
Fast forward to 2009, we hold the power of the Internet in our hands. We can do video calls, take pictures (color), send text and multimedia messages and browse the internet at well over 10mbps from hand-held devices than can fit in the palm of our hands.
I am one of those people that judge our technological advancements by the innovations in mobile technology. After all, mobile phones will dictate the future in a lot of ways. Internet surfing will be completely different from what it is today in a few years time, thanks to mobile technology.
Businesses had to wake up to the idea of doing business on the Internet (ebusiness) or at least having an Internet presence. Going forward, businesses will have to grasp and embrace the concept of social networking and mobile browsing.
As for the domain industry, I don’t know how it will pan out. Lots of changes are already slated for 2010. However, I believe the domain name industry will have to decisively take care of a few problems before it can progress. It has to clean up its practices, most importantly, its image and reputation.
But, saying that, the domain industry needs to be properly defined. Domain parking seems to be on the decline. The question is, can there be a domain industry without domain parking? How will domain parking evolve in the next 10 years?
Will mobile browsing kill the need for a domain name? Will there be a new Internet? Will improvement and further widespread usage of mobile browsers spell the end of the domain parking, AND the domain industry?
There are just too many questions. We all just have to be proactive and stand ready to be flexible to adapt to the new realities coming our way.
Nonetheless, there are some that believe that the world will end in 2012. As a Christian, I do believe that we are in the end of days. The signs are all around. But as they say, plan as if you will live forever, live as if there is no tomorrow.
I believe though, that for people who are proactive, hardworking and smart, 2010 and beyond will be very prosperous. There are loads of opportunities out there. I will surely waste no time in grabbing as many as I can!!
So, let me thank everyone for a great 2009 here at eBusinessDomains.com. I wish for you and your family a fantastic and prosperous 2010.
Happy New Year!!!

I have heard someone said before that people who commit crimes do so because they thought they could get away with it.
Then there is the classic, “Innocent, until proven guilty”.
I have seen a few blogs highlighting the “error” over at Wikipedia, where it is redirecting searches for the terms “Domainer” and “Domaining” to its entry about cybersquatting.
Now if one is feeling patriotic about the domain industry, then they should have concerns about how people view domainers and domaining in general.
The general public has a lot of misguided perceptions about the domain industry. However, you cannot blame the public.
Cybersquatting used to be rampant back in the days. Just like some people associate aeroplanes with flying, a lot of people associate domaining with cybersquatting. ICANN has changed the rules now to help prevent cybersquatting, and trademark holders now have a lot of protection.
However, my reason for writing this article is not by any means patriotic, but rather to pour scorn on some domain industry professionals and companies.
Here in the industry, it is a case of “Do it as long as you can, and it is worth doing if you can make money while doing it.”
You see, a lot of people in the domain industry spend time blaming domain newbies seeking to get rich, quick. However, in my honest opinion, the blame lies with some of the biggest domain industry players, from registrars, to major domain marketplaces to domain parking companies.
Registrars make the most money from trademark domains in registration fees. However, it would be a bit difficult for them to implement any meaningful controls.
Domain parking companies will park the domain name without even giving the slightest consideration to trademark infringement.
We have seen some major domain marketplaces, especially some very reputable domain auctioneers offering trademark domains for auctions. We often see this with the launch of new Top Level Domains (TLDs), or domain extensions as they are better known.
The recent spate of immorality came with the .CM domain extension landrush or whatever it was. .CM is the domain extension for Cameroon, a country with less than 5% internet penetration. It would be ridiculous to start any meaningful eBusiness on that domain extension targeting the Cameroon population, IMHO.
This within itself tells me that the .CM hype and BS is simply targeting cybersquatters.
But then, look at the big domain industry names that are behind the .CM landrush?
If these big domaining brands will sacrifice the goodwill of the domain industry for profits, then who am I to be patriotic?
I have been consistent with my domaining morals from day one. However, given what some of these big players are doing, I am not too happy to be called a domainer these days. I prefer terms like Branding Specialists, Web Entrepreneur, Internet Marketer, eBusiness Specialist, eBusiness Entrepreneur etc, etc.
This is why I am now pushing myself to develop real brands outside of the domaining industry.
It will be a very long time before the domain industry becomes clean. Hate me for saying that. But this is really what disgusts me the most. People trying to pass off as decent domaining professionals or even “experts” and yet all they are trying to do is to take advantage of the ignorant.

Time flies when you are having fun! Today is exactly one year since the launch of the eBusinessDomains.com domain marketplace.
This blog was launched on September 1st last year, so we still has just over a month to go before a full year of blogging.
I believe we have done very well in terms of what we have achieved. We have never done a press release, any paid (blog) reviews, and we have done very minimal paid banner advertisements.
eBusinessDomains.com receives lots of traffic on a daily basis and we have sold numerous domain names.
Our aim from the start was to create a domain marketplace that only lists premium domains capable of successfully branding ebusinesses.
We have been consistent from the start, and I have consistently and repeatedly blogged about quality domains, and their importance to businesses.
Personally I believe by preaching the gospel of quality domains I have earned a few “enemies”, for want of a better word. I think I would be pissed as well if I owned crappy domains and some guy comes on the scene and start making a big fuss about quality domains, rendering my domains useless.
However, I think people should thank me. A crappy domain is always a crappy domain, and I may have saved some people a lot of money in senseless renewal fees.
Over the past year we have done a complete redesign of our site, started a newsletter, this blog and a forum, introduced domain auctions, launched numerous sister websites, and even created a user control panel/management system.
I am proud of what we have achieved with the website. From the very beginning, I wanted a website that would be informative and resourceful, even to the complete newbies. If someone without the slightest clue about domain names visits our website, they will be able to learn a lot about domains. They will:
- learn the basics about domains
- become aware of the domain aftermarket
- get valuable advice about domain investments
- realise the importance of a premium domains to an ebusiness
- and much more
Quite frankly, we still have a long way to go. We have spent the last year building our brand, experimenting and perfecting a few concepts, strategies and technologies.
There will be a day when the spotlight will be turned on the domain industry and we will be ready to capitalise on that exposure. We are building a domain marketplace and brand that is fit for purpose and relevant, without any senseless hype and bogus PR stunts.
I want to personally express my heartfelt gratitude to all the people who have genuinely supported us over the past year. Some people were there with us from the very start.
I will not name anyone, as I will inevitably forget to mention a few people. We look forward to working with you and building our brand and domain marketplace, while helping the domain community and the domain industry to grow in the years to come!
